CCTV cameras and spotlights playfully respond to your movement through a Chinatown laneway.

CCTV cameras and spotlights are now ubiquitous in cities everywhere, lighting up darkened streets and recording citizens as they move through their fields of view.

For this full laneway installation, artist Michael Candy—known for his work with sculpture, robotics and hardware hacking—adapts recognisable civil infrastructure with cutting edge technology.

Candy has installed custom spotlights, embedded in standard CCTV camera housings, that use motion tracking technology to uncannily match your movements through the Chinatown location. Persistence of Vision playfully interrogates the social function of the emerging surveillance and AI technologies which are fast becoming embedded in our daily lives.
